Description

Explore the most powerful tidal current in the world on this tour. The Saltstraumen channel is located in Nordland. It measures only 3 kilometers long and 150 meters wide. Every 6 hours, up to 400 million cubic meters pass through the straight. That’s enough water to fill 160,000 Olympic swimming pools. The water speed reaches up to 40 kilometers per hour.

These fast currents produce extremely large and powerful maelstroms that can reach up to 10 metres in diameter and 5 metres deep. Although you can view these whirlpools from Saltstraumen Bridge, the best way to experience them is by snorkeling in the world’s most powerful tidal current.

If you want to go snorkeling in Saltstraumen to experience these powerful tidal currents, it is best if you are comfortable in the water. You should bring something warm that can be worn underneath your dry suit. Thermal underwear works well. Included in your tour are a drysuit, fins, mask, snorkel, hood, and gloves to wear during your swim.

The minimum suggested an age for this tour is 12 years old, however, everyone must be able to fit into one of the provided dry suits. The smallest suit size available is an XXS.

At the start of your tour, you will be taught everything you need to know in order to participate. This will include a briefing about the things you will see and techniques for getting in and out of the water. Safety is a top priority. You will learn signals and safety techniques. A guide will be in the water with you at all times. And there will always be a boat nearby as well. The experience lasts about 2 hours in total, with 45 minutes spent in the water.

Once you get in the water, you will discover a lot of diverse marine life. Coalfish is the specialty of the area. The largest one that was caught here weighed an impressive 22.7 kilograms. Other commonly seen fish in the area include cod, halibut, wolffish, rosefish, and saithe. You’ll also see a large kelp forest and lots of colorful anemones. Snorkeling in Saltstraumen is bound to be a one of a kind experience that you’ll never forget. Jump on in the water and schedule your snorkeling adventure.
