Ålesund the Ultimate Sightseeing Tour

Come along for this ultimate sightseeing around the beautiful surroundings of Alesund. From the meeting point, you will travel through a number of underwater tunnels, until reaching your first attraction.

On the Island of Giske, you will find numerous farms along with their grazing cows and sheep. Giske is flat and very fertile compared to other islands in Norway. However, the island is most know as being the birthplace of the notorious Rollo the Viking.

Rollo was the first Duke of Normandy and an ancestor of the British Royal Family. You might be familiar with the name Rollo as beeing the brother of Ragnar Lothbrok, in the television series Vikings, but the character is loosely based on the real Viking Rollo.

You will continue your journey to the following stop, the Giske Church. This Norman-style, white marble church was built in the 12th century but the origin of the marble is unknown.

Your excursion will then continue to the beautiful island of Godøy and its iconic fishing village, Alnes. Here you will be able to enjoy the amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean, you can visit the lighthouse or go for a stroll on one of the islands serene beach.

After visiting Giske and Godøy, you will continue by taking a journey back in time. In the Sunnmøre Museum, you will learn about a time when most Norwegians lived a hard life, often under poor circumstances and drawing their livelihood from agriculture and fishing.

Our guide will lead you through the open air part of the museum where 55 old houses are located. Some are open and accessible for an inside inspection. Several exhibitions can be visited inside the main building and in the boathouse, you will learn even more about how life in this part of Norway changed over the centuries.

The last leg of the excursion will take you to the Aksla mountain, famous for its iconic viewpoint over the city of  Ålesund. You will have plenty of photo opportunities while you enjoy the spectacular view over the city and its surrounding islands.

After driving down the Aksla, you will head home as the bus drives you through the city center of Ålesund. Known for its consistent Art Nouveau Architecture and colorful buildings, most of whom were been built between 1904 and 1907, after a fire that destroyed over 800 houses in the city center in January 1904.

Join us for this pleasant journey through the history and sights of Ålesund and its surroundings. Check for availability by choosing date.

NB: The National Road Authorities will be doing extensive maintenance work in the Ålesund area during the year 2018. As a result, the undersea tunnels leading to the islands around the city will be partially closed most of the time. The visit to the island of Giske will not be affected, however, the tunnel going to the island of Godøy will be mostly closed for construction work at daytime.

Should we therefore not be able to visit the lighthouse in Alnes, rest assured that this visit will be replaced with a visit to another exciting venue, which also focuses on Ålesund’s coastal and maritime history. After all, Ålesund is considered by many the “fishing capital” of Norway. This possible temporary change will not lessen the duration or the quality of the tour.
