Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Oslo

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

After your arrival at the Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, you will pick up your rental car and head for the city centre of the capital of Norway. You will then spend your first day exploring the city and its many sights.

Recommended attractions include the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Akor Brygge harbour front, the Holmenkollen National Arena and the museum island on the Bygdøy Peninsula.

Just a few minutes away from Holmenkollen is Frognerseteren, a popular starting point for recreational hiking and skiing in Oslo. It is also the location of an authentic Norwegian restaurant that serves traditional foods, with a scenic view of the city and Oslofjord.

In the city centre of Karl Johans Gate, you will find a variety of shopping centres, restaurants, nightclubs, jazz bars and cafés. You will stay at an accommodation in Oslo for the duration of your first night, gathering strengths for your days ahead on the road.

Day 2 - Coastal Highway between Oslo and Kristiansand

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

On your second day, you will head out from the capital and make your way to the coast of Southern Norway. An approximately three-hour drive will take you to Arendal, a popular summer destination for the locals.

The rocky shores and skerries of Arendal are dotted with wooden houses and boats resting on the waters. At the centre of the town lies the bustling quayside Pollen, where fisherfolk are busy selling their produce at the market, and local restaurants prepare fresh meals with the catch of the day.

Your accommodation for the night awaits within an hour’s drive from Arendal at Kristiansand, so there is no need to rush. Kristiansand is a city lined with islands, which offers activities such as fishing and boating, as well as being a venue for several music festivals.

Day 3 - Kristiansand – Mandal – Stavanger

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

From Kristiansand, you will continue your drive to Stavanger with a stop in Mandal, the southernmost city in Norway. Mandal is known for its numerous beaches, charming white houses and narrow city streets.

En route to Mandal, you will behold a varied combination of sensational scenery including rivers, coastlines and forests. The countryside that surrounds the city is also considered ideal for cycling. Furulunden is a park perfect for catching some sun and perhaps going for a swim.

If time allows, it comes recommended to visit the Lindesnes Lighthouse and Museum, located about 45 minutes from the city centre. This is the oldest lighthouse in Norway, seeped with fascinating WWII history.

As you arrive at your destination of Stavanger, prepare to discover the city’s rich cultural heritage and beautiful coastal sceneries. You will spend your night at a local accommodation.

Day 4 - Stavanger – Haugesund – Leirvik - Bergen

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

Your fourth day will begin with a two-hour drive from Stavanger to Haugesund, a charming and friendly town in the greater Rogaland area. Feel free to rest before heading on to Leirvik, and then onto Bergen where your next accommodation awaits.

Contrary to popular belief, Bergen is not all fjords, but offers a variety of sights, galleries, museums and activities. The Fløibanen Funicular Railway starts out from the city centre and takes you up Mount Fløyen. The view from the top is nothing but spectacular.

The old harbour area of Bergen is called Bryggen and is listed as a UNESCO’s World Heritage site. The architecture of the wooden buildings has been carefully preserved and hosts a variety of restaurants, shops, old offices, artists’ studios and craft workshops. You can also visit the Bryggen Museum, located on site.

Don’t forget to visit the Fish Market in the heart of Bergen, and maybe check out the local nightclub scene, before retreating to your chosen accommodation for the night.

Day 5 - The Mountain Village of Geilo

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

Say farewell to Bergen and head on to the mountain town of Geilo, located no less than 798 meters above sea level. Geilo is known for its fabulous skiing possibilities in winter, and during the summer months, there is an array of outdoor activities in a stunning natural setting.

We recommend a visit to Geilolia Summer Park, where you can take the mountain chairlift up to the top of Mt. Geilolia for a breathtaking panoramic view of the area.

In the area of Hallingskarvet National Park, avid hikers will discover a paradise of possible trails. Other activities include cycling, white water rafting, tennis, golf and fishing. You will spend the night at an accommodation in Geilo.

Day 6 - Mountainous Drive To Oslo

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

It is time to head back to your original destination of Oslo. On the drive from Geilo to Hallingdal, we suggest you visit the Torp stave church, Hallingdal’s oldest building. You can also opt for a break in the municipality of Gol, where you can further your adventures of fishing, cycling or hiking, in the mountain lakes of the area.

From Gol, your route continues to Hønefoss, a town in the municipality of Ringerike. The town gets its name from its resident waterfall, which we highly suggest you pay a visit to. From there, you make your way across the last stretch of your journey, onto Oslo City.

Depending on your arrival, you can fit in some last minute shopping or explore the city some more. You will spend the night in the capital.

Day 7 - Departure

7 Day Self Drive Tour | South Norway & Norwegian Fjords

Drive back to Gardemoen Airport in time for you return flight, to drop off your rental car. You could also book an extra night in the capital of Oslo if you’re not ready to leave just yet.

Your Norwegian summer adventure concludes here, so prepare to have your head filled with wonderful memories, and all your memory cards filled with fantastic photos. Don’t wait any longer in booking your summer adventure now.
